The Charles Hotel, a Rocco Forte Hotel, Munich, Germany

Our next stop on our Interrail journey was the Charles Hotel, a Rocco Forte Hotel, Munich, Germany. The hotel can be found in the Lenbachgarten quarter not far from the Konigsplatz – one of the most famous squares in Munich, and home to a number of galleries and museums.

This high class hotel offers a 5 star luxury stay for guests and has a beautiful botanical garden which gives a pleasant feel to the ambience of the building.

We arrived at the hotel a little earlier than the agreed check in, and the staff were friendly and greeted us at the desk. They kindly explained that our room was not quite ready yet and talked to us about Munich and provided us with a map of locations. They were extremely helpful in this respect and even drew out onto the map a  route of how to see the most important and impressive locations in Munich.

The entrance to the hotel is grand and highly impressive. Amazing furniture and art work adorn the entrance with high ceilings and overhanging lighting. The walls contain glass cabinets lit up with jewellery.

After this, we were shown the bar and restaurant of the hotel and invited to take a seat in Sophia bar. We were provided with a welcome drink and had the opportunity to have one of their specialist cocktails (designed by the hotel bar). A tasty and unique drink in the heart of Bavaria was a welcome experience!

After a short while of relaxing in the bar, we were taken up to our room which had now been made ready for us. I am a big chocolate and biscuit fan, and so when we walked into the room to see the welcome cards and display of luxury chocolate treats I was very happy!

The room was a large sized suite with a beautiful view of the greenery of the surrounding area of the hotel grounds. The bed was extremely comfortable, with clean fresh linen and memory foam mattress. It had all the mod cons you would expect from a high standard luxury hotel, cupboard space, electronic safe, minibar, and excellent lighting.

In the morning, we took the elevator down to the breakfast restaurant, which is located next to Sophia’s Bar. The restaurant is located behind the reception area split between an indoor and outdoor location, with ornate but comfortable tables and seating.

The breakfast included either the use of the buffet bar or selection of food from the a la carte menu. There was the gourmet option of Eggs Benedict, Eggs Royale, Belgian Waffles, Pancakes, French toast, Omelettes, a whole range of delicious beverages. The buffet bar had an extensive selection of Bavarian sausages, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, fruits, cakes, pastries, cereals, and more. There was plenty of space between tables and so you felt there was both comfort and privacy whilst eating.

The hotel pool area has a modernish roman baths feel to it with columns flanking both sides of the wide pool area and it’s spa style loungers. There is also the Charles Spa where you can find beauty treatments and massages to help you unwind, along with a stylish modern gym equipped with excellent machinery and gym equipment.

All in all, the location of the hotel made it ideal for visiting the city sights of Munich, with a stay which was both high class, comfortable, and enjoyable. In short an excellent luxury 5 star hotel.
