Athenia House, a luxury restaurant in Santorini

The Athenian House is situated in Santorini, high on the Cliffside overlooking the caldera and an amazing view of the famous Skaros Rock. It provides an open top restaurant where one can see the spectacular sunsets whilst sampling some sublime and elegant gourmet cuisine on the veranda. There is a romantic atmosphere with plenty of couples clinking glasses and chatting warmly in the Santorini clime.

The Athenian House was awarded the World Luxury Restaurant Awards with 3 prizes “Global Winner for Best Greek Cuisine”, “Continent Winner for Most Romantic Atmosphere in Europe” and “Country Winner for Best Luxury Scenic Setting in Greece”. It has also been voted “Traveller’s Choice” by Tripadvisor. With accolades like this the restaurant has a reputation to live up to – and I am pleased to say it does so spectacularly.

We were given a pleasant welcome and shown to our table (a well placed location to see the dramatic sunset whilst we dine). We were then provided with the inspired and sophisticated menu. We were kept warm by the blankets that they have funished. The service is excellent. The waiters and waitresses know the ingredients and how the food was made, including the wine paired for each course.

After taking some time to first take in the view and the atmosphere, we decided to begin our gastronomical journey with the degustation (tasting) meal, a wonderful opportunity to sample traditional high class Greek cuisine with matching local wines. With healthy ingredients gathered locally, expertly crafted onto the plates, we were treated to a remarkable experience. See for yourself...

To begin with, we had a traditional Greek recipe made from locally sourced fresh fish, organic new potatoes, capers from Santorini, carrots and homemade lavender mayonnaise. This gave a nice fresh start to the meal, with some mineral water to clear the palette for tasting. We were offered a glass of Domaine Harlaftis, Petaloudes 2017.

The Athenian Salad

This is one of my favourite dishes. A delicious slow cooked octopus served in a creamy puree with sweet shallots, Santorini tomatoe paste, thyme and oregano herbs. We tasted a glass of Santorini Dry, Assyrtico, P.D.O. Santorini, which was a perfectly matched wine to this course.

Slow Cooked Octopus Stifado

Grilled filet fish with traditional Greek St Andreas tomato rice. It was at this point we were provided with a marvellous glass of Paros White 2017, Moraitis Winery – my favourite wine of the meal.

Fresh Fish of The Day

This was a dessert to die for! A Greek homemade meringue with Mastiha ice cream, fig marmalade walnuts and dry figs. Unforgettable. Served with, M Dry Mastiha, Isidoros Arvanitis, Kampos Plagias, Lesvos, Dodecanese Islands. Really beautiful dessert wine.

Greek Pavlova

A Greek Baklava with crisp phyllo pastry, peanut butter, salty caramel and pistachio nuts. Outstanding taste and perfectly served! A dessert that really satisfies the taste buds. Unforgettable dessert.
