If you do decide to visit Vietnam then you simply have to try the local food. Vietnam cuisine has some of the best dishes in the world and really is an exciting experience for your taste buds.
Here are some of the fabulous dishes we were lucky enough to try at Avenue restaurant located in the Radisson Blu Resort Phu Quoc.
Well – The Vietnamese certainly know how to cook these. Served with a collection of fresh vegetables alongside, these fried spring rolls were pretty damn good. Not fried too harshly to be overly crispy, and presented with a good looking tanned appearance. These Spring Rolls were just crispy enough to give that satisfying crunch noise when you bite into them, but not with too much oil to feel saturated with fat. They were wonderfully well balanced with flavour – but there’s something even better on the menu…
Oh my god! The Vietnamese Fresh Spring Rolls! I mean I cannot express how much you have to try these. I loved them. Best spring rolls I think I have ever had. Unlike the Chinese fried spring rolls which you might be used to – these Vietnamese Fresh Spring Rolls are delicately wrapped vegetables with a flavour of mint. It is a really refreshing dish to try and really freshens up the palate for the next meal. As Vietnam is so hot, the mint helps you to feel a bit cooler in the heat too. Recommended.
And now we come to the beautiful orangey and textured Crab Cakes. Simply delicious. With a chilli sauce and slice of lemon, it all added to the flavour. My only criticism is that I could easily have eaten more than the two that were served. The dry and crunchy taste of the cake exterior combined with the fluffy texture of the warm crab meat inside feels incredibly satisfying. You can then spice it up a notch with the chilli dip.
The seabass in a cauldron is a yummy and magical dish to be served. Each piece of the Seabass pieces delicately flaking when I put my fork into it, yet also with a scrumptious crispy skin, which tasted satisfyingly crunchy, but in a light a complimenting way. The combination of sauce and vegetables works so well and I have to say this is probably something I could eat every week if I had the chance. Along with the prawns and the Crab Cakes – one of my favourites from the restaurant.
The steak was succulently cooked with just the right balance of flavour and moistness. There is nothing worse than trying to saw through a tough steak! Each slice melted in the mouth and had the right amount of seasoning and a beautiful meaty texture. The freshly cooked and delicate carrot was a nice touch, along with the serving of fresh vegetables and fries.
Wow. What can I say? Look at those handsome prawns! Vietnam is known for it’s seafood and you really can’t go to Vietnam without trying it (well you can – but you’ll be missing out). These prawns were one of my favourite dishes. Over in the UK prawns tend to be either overcooked and rubbery, or tasteless and bland. Not so here! Bursting with flavour, juice from the prawn, with a freshness of the sea, with the sweetness of the caramelisation of the prawns complimented by the coriander and a bit of a kick from the red chilli. This really set alight my taste buds. This is what it’s about.
Grilled pieces of chicken with a sweet kick and lime to flavour. The Grilled Honey Spiced Chicken has the taste of the grill, with the added combination of sweet honey and spices. It’s a tasty little dish full or protein and a fairly lightweight meal – so it’s not too heavy on the stomach. It has the right amount of crispiness and moisture to it, which means that each piece is delightful on the taste buds.
Now we are talking! A great seafood dish with stir friend Vietnamese squid in a perfectly combined sweet and sour sauce. Completely mouth-watering as to be expected. There is something about stir fried seafood in this part of the world which is just mind blowing. It tastes completely satisfying and enjoyable.
Well I am a desert kind of guy, so I always have to finish with a desert. With this flan, I love the sweet and delicate flavour of the egg combined with the sweetness of the sauce. Marbles of dragon fruit and melon adorn the top for a bit of extra flavour. My only complaint is that there wasn’t enough of it!
Something healthy for the body. 5 portions of fruit; Dragon Fruit, Melon, Mango, Watermelon, and Guava. Nicely presented and made me feel that I was doing something positive for my diet which can always suffer when I am holiday! The fruit tastes nicer in this part of the world as it isn’t frozen and transported half way across the world by merchant shipping or plane. Nice way to finish.
